Yuexiu Park & the Five Rams

The Five Rams statue is the emblem of Guangzhou — the legend says five immortals rode in on rams carrying rice sheaves, which is why the city answers to Ram City and Flower City and Sui City depending on who's talking. The statue sits in Yuexiu Park, in the middle of the old city, and the park is where Guangzhou does its morning exercises.

The morning the park belongs to locals

Before 9am the park fills with the people who live around it: tai chi under the trees, badminton on the paths, the dancing that happens in every Chinese park at dawn. It's free, it's the most honest hour in the city, and by mid-morning it's a regular park again. If you only do one early morning here, do this one — it costs nothing and it explains more about the city than any ticket.

What to look at

Getting there

Metro Line 2 to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall station, or Line 1/2 to Gongyuanqiao — both a short walk in. The park is free; the tower museum has its own small ticket and its own closing day, so check before you plan the morning around it.

Yuexiu pairs naturally with the old-city afternoon: Beijing Road is a few stops east, and the cathedral is walkable from there. One district per day is the rule; this is the day the old city is yours.
