Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

Nineteenth-century Lingnan carving — roofs stacked with clay figurines, brick panels dense enough to stare at for ten minutes. Entry is ¥10, which is almost embarrassingly little. And it is closed every Tuesday except public holidays.

Why it's worth the two hours

The Chen Clan built this as an ancestral hall and a school for the family's exam candidates, and the money shows. The whole complex is a museum of Lingnan craft: the roof ridges carry processions of ceramic figurines, the brick reliefs tell stories in panels, and the central axis — entrance hall, the hall of mind, the back hall — runs about 1.5 to 2 hours at a look-everything pace. Free guided tours gather at the main gate at 10:00 and 15:00.

The trap: closed Tuesdays, not Mondays

Every visitor plans around a museum being shut on Monday — it's the reflex the whole world has — and then walks into a closed gate on a Tuesday afternoon. Not Monday. Tuesday. If your Guangzhou day is a Tuesday, build the day around something else and put this on the list for Wednesday.

Getting there

Metro Line 1 or 8 to Chen Clan Academy station, Exit D, about three minutes on foot. Combine it with the Xiguan lanes in Liwan the same afternoon — the arcade streets and teahouses are a short ride west, and the two together make a full, unhurried old-city day.

The bigger lesson worth taking from this one site: China's sights close on days you don't expect, and the good ones sell out their timed slots days ahead. Every plan we write carries the closed-day table so nothing quietly expires while you're at lunch.
