Beijing Road

There's a shopping street in Guangzhou with a glass floor, and under the glass are the layers: Song-dynasty paving, dynastic strata stacked in a cutaway under your shoes, lit and free to walk over. Most visitors stroll it on the way to the mall and never look down.

Look down

It's the cheapest history lesson in China: a thousand years of city, stratified, under a shopping street, no ticket. The glass section runs along the pedestrian stretch — you'll know it when families are crouched over it taking photos of the pavement.

Evening is the right hour

The street comes alive after dark, the food lanes off it fill, and the whole thing becomes what it actually is — a neighbourhood high street that happens to have a dynasty underneath. Come at dusk, stay for dinner, and let the day end here rather than starting here.

Getting there

Metro Line 6 to Beijing Road station. The street is pedestrianised through the middle of the day, and the excavated layers are on the open stretch between the malls — free, no ticket, no closing time to race.

The insider move

The lanes running off Beijing Road are where the food gets local and cheap — that's where the day should end, not at the mall food court. The right lane for the right night is one of the small decisions a plan makes for you, because which lane is good changes with the day of the week and how late you're out.

Nearby, if the day isn't full: Dafo Temple, a quiet working Buddhist temple in Yuexiu that almost no itinerary includes — free, shaded, and a useful hour before dinner. And if you want the bigger old-city picture, Yuexiu Park is a short ride north.
