Canton Tower & the Pearl River

Canton Tower is the skyline — 600 metres of tapered needle, purple at night. It is also a lesson in what not to buy. The paid observation decks are expensive, the queues are long, and the view, while genuinely good, is the same view you get for free.

The local move: the plaza, not the tower

Flower City Square, the riverside plaza south of the tower. After dark the LED show runs up the tower, the plaza fills with families and guys flying kites, and the whole thing costs nothing. Metro Line 3 or the APM to Canton Tower station.

If you do want to go up

Sunset slot on a weekday, booked ahead. The value is the light, not the height — and the queue for the lifts is the tax you pay for the photograph everyone else has.

The better night view: the river

The Pearl River cruise from the Tianzi or Tower pier, running about 19:00–20:30. The lights start dimming around 22:30, so don't drift. An hour on the river shows you the whole city — old stone houses, new glass, the bridges lit — and it's the one tourist cliché in Guangzhou that earns it.

Timing the night

Plaza for the LED show after dark, then the cruise, then back through the towers. Doing the same stretch three times in one evening sounds repetitive and isn't — the river changes completely between seven and ten.

Which of these to do on which night, and which to skip entirely, is exactly the kind of decision a plan makes so you're not choosing between four options at 9pm with tired feet.
